For Ingmar Bergman's 100th birthday I'm posting some frames from my favorite of his films, En passion (a Passion, known in the US as the Passion of Anna) with Bibi Andersson, Max von Sydow, Liv Ullmann & Erland Josephson.
Perhaps I'm wrong to think so, but I believe this is Bergman's finest, and by that I may mean wondrously elusive, film. All of the characters' stories, their histories and actions, work together perfectly. Of course Nykvist's photography is flawlessly atmospheric and vibrant; and Bergman's camera placement and direction couldn't be any other way. It all looks and feels inevitable, and I love how the story appears to double back on itself.
