Baselitz's Orange Eaters, Sleepers, Singers & Drinkers
Georg Baselitz painted these series in 1982, including the Orange Eaters, the Drinkers, the Singers and Sleepers. I like that he would consistently deny the importance of subject matter in his work and that gullible critics swallowed the bait. I recently read a very foolish review in the Washington Post of the recent retrospective at the Hirshhorn, written by someone who clearly has no familiarity with the practice of painting. Fortunately, I have no need of a giant retrospective or knowledge of his present presence in the art market to confirm Baselitz’s importance to the history of this particular art.
