Though they were not well received by most of the art critics at the time, Goethe himself was well impressed and said that he could not have imagined these scenes any better himself.

Eugène Delacroix made seventeen illustrations for Faust after seeing an English production of the play in London in June 1825. He worked on them for over two years.
