James Gray fictionalized Percy Fawcett’s search for evidence of an early civilization in the region of the border between Boliva and Brazil in the first three decades of the 20th century, but not grossly, and very much in support of his theme and the clarity of his story.  Gray concerned himself above all with Fawcett’s search for the sublime through his great quest for a fabled city that turned out to be right where he said it was (though the evidence either eluded or disappeared with him in the Amazonian jungle, only to be confirmed recently through the deforestation in the region.)  Darius Khondji, through a strategic use of flashing, and careful selection of film stock, draws extraordinary depth from the dense foliage and enveloping mists.  Charlie Hunnam shows himself once again (along with Tom Hardy) to be the most passionately committed English actor of his generation.
