(20 September 1915 - 23 February 1999)
Mr Lee-Smith was a painter
who taught at the Art Students League in Manhattan in the 1960s &
70s for a period of about fifteen years. He studied at the Cleveland
Museum of Art and the Cleveland Institute of Art in the 1930s. He
taught art and danced professionally as well. Most of the paintings
above were made in the 1950s and are oil on masonite. The later ones are
oil on canvas. The paintings are presented here in chronological
order, the earliest from 1951 and the latest from 1987 (though he of
course continued painting nearly to the very end of his days.) They all
take inspiration from the time he lived with his grandmother in Atlanta
GA after his parents split up.
