Mr Morley (7 June 1931 – 2 June 2018) was my favorite living painter until he died the other day. Above and below are some of his oils and watercolors and assemblages. I went to the opening of one of his shows at Xavier Fourcade Gallery thirty five years ago and he was there. I wanted to give him one of my little playing card paintings, but he wouldn’t finish talking with Roy Lichtenstein (whose work I don’t much like) and I got envious and annoyed and left. Morley had the sort of art-life I thought I wanted in my youth. I wish I could have known him beyond that brief moment I made a glowering fool of myself in his presence.
