SADE (2000)

Much more accurate telling than Kaufman's Quills.
In Jacquot's tale of Louis Sade, the writer is sent
to a hospital in the country during the Reign of Terror.
His lover Mademoiselle Quesnet pulls strings via her protector,
Robespierre's right-hand Jacobin, Fournier.
There, the Marquis meets his future protégés,
Emilie the noblewoman and Augustin the gardener.
Not wanting to die without experiencing physical passion.
She turns to the Marquis for unrequested advice.
Finding none better suited to her needs, including himself,
Emilie & Sade decide to educate Augustin to service her.
Under the writer's direct guidance.
Jalil Lespert is especially moving as Augustin.
Few remember the majority of the victims of the Terror
were Peasants. Benoit Jacquot did not forget.
