João Pedro Rodrigues
photographed by Rui Poças
starring Ricardo Meneses
Lisbon Portugal 2000
Sexually explicit and Queer, Rodrigues’ feature debut presents a series
of enigmatic actions by the increasingly obsessed young garbageman
played by the untrained yet expressive Ricardo Meneses. The film maker
evokes the spirit of some of the earliest masterpieces of cinema,
specifically the work of Feuillade. As the story progresses,
Sérgio, the trash collector, grows increasingly in tune with his
animal nature, finally glorying in the command of his realm, a
magnificent dump. Some have called this a descent into abjection, but
that isn’t how it feels while watching. Meneses is far too resplendent
in his latex cat suit for it to seem in any way a defeat.
