Guillermo del Toro again shows that (along with Carlos Reygadas) he is the most skilled and artful Mexican filmmaker now working. Despite his seeming success in the commercial spheres of cinema, he remains firstly an artist obsessed with the movies that fed his childhood imagination. Here he is elaborating on Jack Arnold’s iconic Creature from the Black Lagoon, but from a more pointedly political and romantic point of view; and though it was made in Canada, this viewpoint is decidedly Mexican.
