Nicholas Hilliard, 1547-1619
The greatest of the home grown English painters of the sixteenth century was Nicholas Hilliard who came to painting by way of his family trade of Goldsmith and Limner. He was appointed Royal Goldsmith and Limner for Elizabeth Tudor some time before 1572, when his first recorded portrait of her occurred, a miniature painted on vellum.
