For the eighty fifth birthday, yesterday, of the remarkably resilient Roman Polanski I have put together a post of frames from a favorite of his more recent films, the undervalued Satanic fairy tale, the Ninth Gate. The cast and crew are worthy of note, especially the performances of Johnny Depp, Lena Olin, Frank Langella, Emmanuelle Seigner, James Russo, José Lopez Rodero and Barbara Jefford; the photography of Darius Khondji, the production design of Dean Tavoularis and the score by Wojciech Kilar.
