The Fool (1990 Sands Films)

The Fool, by Christine Edzard & Olivier Stockman, was made a few years after her mammoth filming of Little Dorritt.  The source for Edzard and Stockman’s screenplay was a group of interviews collected by Henry Mayhew  (cofounder of Punch), which give first hand working class accounts of the period.  The picture recounts the story of a working class clerk (for a theatre) who passes himself off in Good Society as Sir John, the unseen patron of the theatre, for whom he has power of attorney.  After swindling various business men out of a million pounds, using their own entirely legal methods, he scatters the money out the window to the wind, as they watch.
