Art, propaganda and pornography presented by the artist sometimes known as Arte Barrato (even misspelled as it is here,) some of it his own work and most of it stuff he appreciates and chooses to elucidate and honor.
I suppose the only thing remarkable about the following images is that they were deemed unsuitable for another site which displayed far more outrageous content. One can only guess why they were removed. It can only have been for the sake of economic-political laws that were thereby violated. These are various experimental digital portraits organized around the themes of loss, failure, friendship and sensual pleasure. Nothing shown here is as outrageous as the obscene privilege of those corporations which now rule our means of mass communications. I hope I will be allowed to sneak in a few sly subversive missives from time to time. I don't pretend that this is one such message.
As mentioned in the previous post concerning Lucian Freud, one of the first paintings of his that I got to see and spend some time with was the one above, Naked Man With His Friend. The paintings below are some of my favorite paintings by Mister Freud. I shall greatly miss the sensation of seeing new work by him, now that there will be no more new work. Among the works, which I've selected here, there are several where Freud has reused a grouping from an earlier artist's painting. The three artists he paid tribute to in this way were Watteau, Chardin, and Cezanne. I've always liked painters who acknowledged their masters.
These are some of the drawings which led inevitably to the Jungle Boy books and video, from which I've shown some illustrations on previous occasions. As one can see, there were various models considered for the role. There can be no question, though, that the best candidate was cast.
Though I made some lovely photographs that incorporated these drawings, laid out carefully on the bed in my old room in Connecticut, I've never shown them (neither the drawings nor the photos) in any formal way; which is to say that they've never been hung on a wall. Since I haven't shown any of my own work here of late, I thought it high time I did; and these were the best I could come up with. I believe they hang together rather well and I hope the viewer may take something away from their viewing of them, if only a slight tingle on the back of the neck.
The short essays and the images I post to this blog tend to reflect my present interests and work. Occasionally I will present my own work in drawing or painting, but more often what one finds here are the sources for that work.
