Described by one admirer as the first Anti-Spy Film, it strikes me more as a more serious version of the old MAD Magazine comic strip SPY VS SPY (not that it’s devoid of humor.)  The MacKintosh Man is not usually trotted out as one of Huston more enviable efforts, but I like it just fine.  It’s very well made, well told, acted, designed, edited, shot and, well, brutally honest.  Huston said he was particularly proud of the ending, which Bresson’s gentle woman, Dominique Sanda, handles with blood chilling calm and righteous anger.  Walter Hill dismissed the results without ever having seen the picture and Huston is said to have completely rewritten Hill’s solely credited script night by night before the next day’s shooting (shades of Beat the Devil, another Huston film I like a lot.)
