Drawings by Sadao Hasegawa

(circa 1950 - 20 November 1999)

Given his frequent use of cords and bondage in his sadomasochistic illustrations, it isn’t surprising to learn that Hasegawa strangled himself with a rope, one end of which was tied to the knob of his hotel room door in Bangkok.  The last drawing down is dated exactly a month before his death.  He chose to do it a few days before the anniversary of Mishima’s suicide and left behind a miniature portrait of the writer painted on a stone.  It was the only object that he brought into the room other than himself and the rope.
