Thomas Lawson's New World Paintings

Said to be inspired by Tiepolo's The New World, everyone here is seen from behind. They seem to be gathered to watch a spectacle of some sort, perhaps a victory parade. We have so many victories these days.

For many years now my favorite contemporary painters have been Walter Robinson and Thomas Lawson. Coincidentally, they were both part of the original group of "Picture" artists represented by Metro Pictures; and they both were dropped when their work proved insufficiently commercial. Fortunately their being discarded by the Art World Distribution Machine hasn't prevented them from continuing their good work.
