Eat at Judy’s

Twin Peaks: the Return part 18
What is your name?
David Lynch & Mark Frost
Anaheim CA & Snoqualmie WA 2017

Though Lynch has stated several times that he’s not an encyclopaedic cinephile, he does make allusions in his work to certain key films (Wizard of Oz, Sunset Boulevard, Vertigo, Lolita and a few others) and I would say there are definitely references to EG Ulmer’s Detour in Lost Highway (though that could be be more Barry Gifford’s doing than Lynch’s,)  I would also say that there’s more than a little of Ann Savage’s Vera in Sheryl Lee’s Carrie and a little of Tom Neal’s Al in Kyle MacLachlan’s Richard; and those long stretches of two figures driving long stretches of desolate highway seem to pay homage to Detour in other, spiritual, ways.  I’ve long hoped that he would do another two-hander, like he did in his great teleplay Blackout (1993, written by Gifford, starring Alicia Witt & Crispin Glover,) and in the last half hour of the Return, that’s very nearly what we get.  It’s some of Lynch’s spookiest, most purposeful and austere work that he’s done and in its way almost unendurably perfect.
