4.Beheading of John the Baptist 1609

5.Denial of Peter 1610

Caravaggio made the paintings reproduced above between the years 1608 and 1610, mostly on the islands of Malta and Sicily, and very much on the run from various legal authorities that sought his imprisonment or death.  The brushwork is understandably bolder, the pictures less finished.  These are a small sample of the output of those last few years, somewhat curtailed by pursuit, but not so much as one might expect.  The so called unfinished quality of the work no doubt reflects the unfinished nature of the late life of the most naturally gifted of all painters.  He was thirty eight years old when he died.
