The Long Goodbye

Robert Altman, Los Angeles, California, 1973,
photographed by Vilmos Zsigmond (June 1930 - January 2016)

Coincidentally, Altman and Zsigmond did their best work two of the three times they worked together.  Vilmos used the technique, pioneered by the British cameraman, Freddie Young, known as flashing, where the negative is carefully and slightly exposed beforehand in order to lower the contrast of the resulting image.  The frames above come from their third collaboration, which Zsigmond singled out as the finest comic film he ever worked on.  He had especially high praise for Elliott Gould.
