Krzysztof Penderecki’s Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima (1960) has been a favorite musical composition for many years now.  I would sometimes listen to it at work in the Cooley Godward mail room as I tallied up the monthly certified mail receipts; and a Polish accountant, who also worked there, rightly corrected my pronunciation of the composer’s name (the c is like an s in English, say: Pendereski.)   Lynch has used Penderecki’s music before, in earlier works, and excerpts from this piece in particular, but never so centrally as here.  The quality of the imagery appears to be inspired by the music, as much as it is by the Trinity Test.
